The Wonders of Magnesium

Recently, I had two professional experiences that are inextricably linked. The other night, I chaired a medical meeting, the topic of which was "the management of chronic pain and fibromyalgia". The presenter was a psychiatrist. While his talk wasn't especially enlightening, what caught my attention was his two case studies. These were about two of his patients whom he successfully treated for chronic pain, depression and fibromylagia. One was on a cocktail of eight drugs including more than one anti-depressant, three anti-epileptic medications and a number of pain-killers. The other was on six different medications. She was similarly managed with a combination of treatments.....

Magnesium and the National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a primary federal agency in the USA for conducting and supporting medical research. The NIH invests nearly $32.3 Billion US dollars’ annually into medical research. Their mission is “to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behaviour of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce illness and disability” (The National Institutes of Health 2015, What We Do, https://www.nih.gov/about-nih/what-we-do).

According to the NIH (2016) “Magnesium, an abundant mineral in the body… is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production … it contributed to the structural development of bones and is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA and the antioxidant glutathione. World Health Organisation (WHO) and Magnesium in Drinking Water

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the United Nations agency for health and medical research. They aim to “build a better, healthier future for people all over the world … work side by side with governments and other partners to ensure the highest attainable level of health for all people” (World Health Organisation 2017, Who are we, What we do,http://who.int/about/en/).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stipulated the significance of magnesium in drinking water and have identified that low levels of magnesium are linked to hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and many more (World Health Organisation 2009, Calcium and Magnesium in Drinking Water, http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/nutrientsindw.pdf > pg. 4-6) .

Alkaline Magnesium Bicarbonate Water in Australia

In a clinical trial, the short term effects of a magnesium bicarbonate solution mixed into spring water was measured in 67 women between the ages of 50 and 70 years. The study showed that there were many health benefits including, acid/base balance, bone metabolism and cardiovascular risk factors all showed improvements, through regular consumption of the magnesium bicarbonate water.

How does it work in the body? And why it’s called the Fountain of Youth.

An alkaline magnesium bicarbonate works to balance the bodied pH levels. The Role of Bicarbonate in the Body.

The role of bicarbonate as a buffering system is to regulate blood pH. The buffer works to resist change to the pH when acid are added, the bicarbonate buffer is the only system that is coupled with the respiratory system, making it one of the most important. Bicarbonate is also necessary for digestion, to help buffer lactic acid that is built up during exercise and also helps to reduce the acid we consume form dietary components.
